Coal Mine Methane Collection and Combustion Offsets
CCX has developed simple, standardized rules for issuing Carbon Financial Instrument® (CFI™) contracts for coal mine methane emission offsets. CCX coal mine methane offset projects are projects which collect and/or destroy coal mine methane which would have vented to atmosphere.
Basic Specifications:
-
Qualifying projects may earn offsets during the years 2003 to 2010.
-
Offsets issued at a rate of 21 metric tons of carbon dioxide per ton of methane collected and destroyed.
-
Project owners must demonstrate clear ownership rights to the methane.
-
All projects must be verified by a CCX-Approved Verifier.
CCX coal mine methane offsets are issued to owners of coal mine methane collection and/or destruction systems placed into operation on or after January 1, 2003. Eligible projects may qualify for offsets for the 2003 - 2010 period. Offsets may be registered from either pre-mining or post-mining activities.
